Teeth Whitening in Purcellville, VA

Welcome to South Fork Dentistry, your local cosmetic dentist in Purcellville! If you want to improve the appearance of your smile, we offer multiple options to achieve it. One of the easiest and most effective ways is through teeth whitening, and we have a range of professional solutions that can transform your smile.

Help Your Smile Shine Bright

As we age, our teeth can become yellow and dull due to various factors, such as drinking coffee, tea, and wine, or smoking. Brushing alone isn't enough to remove stains, but our professional-grade teeth whitening gel can whiten your teeth by up to eight shades, compared to just two shades with store-bought solutions.

Who is a good candidate for teeth whitening?

Most people are good candidates for teeth whitening. The only thing we want to watch out for is anybody who has super sensitive teeth or somebody who has a lot of restorative work like veneers, crowns, or fillings on their front smiling teeth.

What whitening options does South Fork Dentistry offer?

Good question. We offer one whitening option because we believe it is the best. That is the only option. It is core whitening and the system we use is a two-week at-home whitening followed up by an in-office treatment to give you near permanent results.

How white can I realistically expect my teeth to get?

There is a maximum shade in which teeth can get white, and that's different for everybody, but with the whitening we use in-office, your teeth can get very white, even as white as a zero shade.

How long does the whitening last?

Our whitening in-office is permanent. All you have to do is some maintenance touch-ups at home every couple of months, sometimes only once or twice a year, depending upon how much stain-causing food you consume.

Will teeth whitening work on crowns, veneers, or fillings?

No, whitening does not whiten crowns, veneers, and fillings. That's something we can discuss with the doctor if you'd like to whiten your teeth and you have those restorations.

Is the procedure safe for my enamel and gums?

Yes. Whitening is monitored by dental professionals, and we'll make sure that we're taking all precautions to ensure that your gums and your teeth are not affected.

What ingredients are used in the whitening agent?

Good question. Whitening is done only with hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. Those are the only things that can whiten your teeth.

Will the whitening cause sensitivity and if it does, what should I do?

Yes. Whitening can cause sensitivity, but we do lots of things to combat that. The product we use comes with a desensitizer. We also recommend that you switch to Sensodyne a couple of weeks before. If you still experience sensitivity, we recommend you come in so that we can try something a little stronger to reduce the sensitivity.

Can I eat and drink normally while whitening my teeth?

For the most part, you can eat and drink pretty normally. You want to avoid anything that can stain a white t-shirt. If you're going to have those things, you want to brush and floss immediately after consuming them, like red wine, coffee, tea, berries, and turmeric. Those are all things that could potentially alter the results.

How can I maintain the results longer?

Good question. To maintain your whitening results longer, the more you avoid stain-inducing foods and beverages, the longer it's going to last. Good oral hygiene will also maintain your results.

How often can I repeat the whitening safely?

We don't ever want to repeat the in-office whitening. That's a one-time thing, but you can safely use your in-home trays around once a month to once every three months.

Will whitening damage my teeth if I do it too often?

It can. If we're over-whitening our teeth or using a whitening more than recommended by your dental professional, it can cause damage to your enamel, leading to severe sensitivity.

Is whitening covered by dental insurance?

No. Whitening is considered a cosmetic procedure. It's something that you elect to do on your own, so most insurances do not cover it.

How It Works

When a whitening solution is applied to the teeth, the hydrogen peroxide inside of the solution penetrates through the enamel. It then starts the oxidation process where molecules are transformed to reflect less or no light. This makes them appear colorless, and teeth appear white. This process is typically extremely effective for eliminating stains and can be repeated frequently.

If your stains are too strong for a teeth bleaching procedure, we offer alternative treatments like dental veneers. However, we recommend trying teeth whitening first as it is non-invasive and can often provide excellent results.

It's also important to have your teeth whitened before getting any dental restorations like crowns, veneers, bridges, or implants. These materials are stain and bleach resistant and are created to match the shade of your surrounding teeth. If your surrounding teeth are yellow, the restorations will be too.

Our teeth whitening procedure is painless and easy to complete, and we recommend scheduling a dental exam first to ensure that your teeth and gums are healthy enough for whitening. To learn more or to get started, call (540) 778-9606 and schedule an appointment today!
