Hi, my name is Dr. Simren Singh. I know a lot of you have some questions about cosmetic dentistry, so I hope to answer some of those for you.
So tell me a little bit more, like what does cosmetic dentistry include? What kind of procedures or cosmetic Invisalign?
Cosmetic dentistry can include something as simple as Invisalign just to get your teeth aligned; it can include whitening to get you a brighter smile, or it can include procedures such as composite veneers or porcelain veneers.
How do I know if cosmetic dentistry is the right thing for me or someone in my family?
Cosmetic dentistry might be a great option for you if you find yourself hiding your smile, not smiling in pictures, not feeling confident just smiling.
What's the difference between cosmetic dentistry and general dentistry?
General dentistry is anything that only improves the health of your teeth. Cosmetic dentistry is any type of procedure that enables you to be more confident in the appearance of your smile.
How can a cosmetic dentist fix my teeth?
A cosmetic dentist can fix your teeth simply again with something as simple as Invisalign to get things nice and straight. We can make things brighter with whitening. We can improve the shape and the color of your teeth with procedures such as composite veneers or porcelain veneers.
What would the difference between composite veneers and composite bonding?
Both are minimally invasive procedures that require very little removal of tooth structure. The thing is, composite bonding is a cheaper option, it's an acceptable option, but it's not as durable as something like porcelain veneers. So with composite veneers, you're going to have to expect to replace them after a few years due to normal wear and tear. Something like porcelain veneers is going to last you at least, when done right, at least a couple of decades.
Can cosmetic dentistry fix an overbite?
In the case of an overbite, anything to do with your bite, we want to take a look at something like Invisalign first to get the teeth in the right position before we think about changing the shape of the teeth.
How old should a child be before considering cosmetic dentistry?
If it's something like Invisalign, as soon as they're likely a pre-teen, they're ready for something like that. Whitening, we like to wait until they're 16. In some cases, we will do something like composite bonding when they are below 18.
What other conditions can be fixed with cosmetic dentistry?
Conditions that can be fixed with cosmetic dentistry typically include the alignment of the teeth, the shape of the teeth, the color of the teeth, just the general appearance of the teeth.
When is cosmetic dentistry considered oral surgery?
Cosmetic dentistry is considered oral surgery whenever you have to replace missing teeth. So if you're getting a prosthesis over implants, that is going to be considered cosmetic dentistry that involves surgery. Anything else would be considered oral surgery in cosmetic dentistry. Oh, if we sometimes have to do something called a gum lift, that is a minor surgery where if you have too much gum showing when you smile, we can actually lift the gum to show more teeth.
What are the advantages and benefits of cosmetic dentistry?
The advantages of cosmetic dentistry are that it makes you comfortable just smiling big, which can have a huge impact on your confidence and the way you live your life.
What is the process I can expect to go through when I'm doing something with cosmetic dentistry?
The process that you can expect to go through if you're going to undergo any type of cosmetic dentistry, we first like to start with the consultation, where we agree on a smile design. Once we agree on a smile design where we have the end in mind, then we go over the steps that will help you achieve that dream smile.
What should I consider when choosing a dentist for cosmetic dentistry?
You want to make sure that your cosmetic dentist has the proper qualifications and training to do something like a smile transformation.
How would one do that?
Well, I can say that I, my credentials include, I am a Kois-trained dentist. I trained under the world-renowned Dr. John Kois, the leader in cosmetic dentistry.
Is cosmetic dentistry painful?
Cosmetic dentistry does not have to be painful. If we're just broadening your smile, sometimes cosmetic dentistry can involve absolutely no removal of teeth.
What anesthesia options would be available during a cosmetic dental procedure?
The anesthesia options would include local anesthesia if needed, sometimes it's not needed at all. If you're anxious about the dentist, we can also consider oral sedation options, which include a short-acting Xanax that can make you feel nice and calm in the chair.
How long will it take for me to recover from a cosmetic dental procedure?
Well, it depends on what procedure. If it involves surgery, there's going to be a little bit more of a recovery period, of course. But if it's something as simple as composite bonding, same day, you're good to go.
Is cosmetic dentistry covered by insurance?
Unfortunately, cosmetic dentistry is not covered by insurance, but there are options to make it more affordable, like Cherry and financing options.

Porcelain Veneers: the Instant Smile Makeover
Porcelain veneers are often called an "instant smile makeover" — and for good reason. In as few as two or three appointments, we can transform a smile with stained and/or crooked teeth and turn it into the kind of smile you once thought impossible.
Porcelain veneers are the perfect cosmetic treatment for patients looking for fast, dramatic results. But, you should be aware that porcelain veneers take commitment. Once your teeth are prepped for veneers, you will likely need to stick with veneers for the rest of your life. If you are unsure you want that level of commitment, you may be interested in a combination of teeth whitening, orthodontics, and/or odontoplasty. We would be happy to help you find the solution that is right for you.
Teeth Shaping (Odontoplasty)
Teeth don't always erupt evenly, and sometimes teeth just take on a shape of their own. If this sounds like your dental situation, odontoplasty may be helpful.
During an odontoplasty procedure, the dentist shapes the tooth using either a dental sanding disk or a diamond-tipped drill. Odontoplasty is done to alter the size, shape, and length of the tooth. This type of treatment may be right for you if you have any of the following cosmetic conditions:
- Uneven anterior (front) teeth
- Teeth that slightly overlap
- Minor crowding that complicates brushing or flossing
- Teeth than are overly pointed
- Chipped tooth
- Uneven enamel surfaces
Dental Bonding: The Fast, Affordable Way to Correct Cosmetic Issues
Dental bonding uses a composite resin material to correct the appearance of chipped, misshapen teeth, and other cosmetic conditions. Dental bonding is faster and less expensive than porcelain veneers, but it does come with some trade-offs.
With dental bonding, the material can be tinted to match the surrounding teeth. Although, the material does not have the same layered, opaque appearance as porcelain veneers or natural teeth, nor does it have the stain resistance or longevity of porcelain veneers. Most bonded materials last approximately seven years, compared to around 20 years for porcelain veneers. Another important difference is that bonding material, unlike porcelain veneers, can stain. Therefore, you should be mindful of consuming dark or high-tannin foods and drinks.
